Want to live downtown? How about in an apartment with a view?
The new owners of McKay Tower are dipping a toe into the downtown housing market by remodeling unsold top-story condominium units into luxury apartments.
“The research we have done has shown a demand for apartments,” said Chaundra Derks, director of operations for Steadfast Properties LLC, which bought McKay Tower last summer from internet entrepreneur Mark Roller.
“We also think the location is amazing and the views are great.”
Currently, the company is only remodeling the 15th floor into apartments amid an ongoing renovation project for the building that includes a new event space on the second floor, lobby improvements to upper floors and a new elevator system.
Three new luxury apartments in one of Grand Rapids’ iconic buildings will offer short- and long-term leases in the heart of the city’s action.
A renovation a few years ago created rooms with a view on the 15th floor of the 17-story McKay Tower. Building owner Steadfast Properties, LLC has completed the buildout of one one-bedroom, one-bath apartment which is on the market for $2,000 per month. The 850-square-foot unit has granite countertops, a laundry area with a full-sized washer and dryer, and lots of closet space — amenities that each apartment will have, says Operations Director Chaundra Derks.
Two additional units, each with two bedrooms and two baths, include living room fireplaces and will be finished in time for downtown summer festivities. Each carries a monthly price tag between $4,000 and $5,000.
All of the apartments feature interiors by local designer Kathryn Chaplow and come fully furnished, including pots and pans, tableware, linens, and towels. Residents have the use of the 16th floor lounge which has a wet bar and fireplace, plus the 17th floor rooftop deck which has a grill and patio furniture.
Luxurious residential units soon to be available on 15th floor of historic high-rise
Would you prefer to look down on Rosa Parks Circle, the central business district or the Medical Mile? That’s the question McKay Tower officials are asking individuals that have expressed interest in living in the historic high-rise in the heart of downtown Grand Rapids.
This week McKay Tower announced that a total of three fully-furnished apartments on the 15th floor will become available for rent. One apartment, a 1-bed/1-bath unit, recently went on the market. All have spectacular views of downtown Grand Rapids and access to a residents-only rooftop deck.
In addition, each apartment will have short- and long-term lease options, free internet access, free utilities and washer and dryer laundry closets.
“McKay Tower is a cornerstone of downtown so we welcome the chance to offer luxurious living space for those that want to live in the center of it all,” says Chaundra Derks, Operations Director for McKay Tower’s owner Steadfast Properties, LLC.
The first unit, which recently went on the market, is an 850 SF, 1-bedroom, 1-bathroom fully furnished space that overlooks the northern portion of downtown. Monthly rent is set at $2,000.
The remaining two units, which are expected to be available by summer, are 2-bedroom, 2-bathroom and range between nearly 1,900 and 2,200 SF. Monthly rent for the both will fall between $4,000 and $5,000.
Each apartment will be fully furnished and designed by noted Grand Rapids interior designer Kathryn Chaplow.
Tony Pearson, of True North Real Estate, is handling the rental listings for McKay Tower.
McKay Tower officials will consider renovating former office space on the 14th floor into apartments should there be demand.
“McKay Tower has a connection with people that enjoy the location and charm, so we’ll consider renovating additional units as demand dictates,” Derks adds.
